Silent Auction
GRANDMOTHERS CAMPAIGN
Sponsored by the Almaguin Quilt Guild
The Almaguin Quilt Guild is sponsoring a fundraising event for the Stephen Lewis Foundation, more specifically the “Grandmother to Grandmother” campaign. The Stephen Lewis Foundation launched this campaign in March 2006 to raise awareness, build solidarity and mobilize funds for Africa, grandmothers and the orphans in their care.
Funds raised by the campaign have supported grandmothers’ immediate needs: food, transportation, home visits, medical care, adequate housing and bedding, school fees and uniforms for orphans as well as coffins to allow for the dignified burial of a loved one. If you are interested in finding our more about this campaign, check out this website, www.stephenlewisfoundation.org.
The Almaguin Quilt Guild’s project is a Traveling Silent Auction, beginning mid-August and continuing until mid-December. This auction will travel the Almaguin Highlands and will be present at festivals, fairs, church suppers, craft sales and farmer’s markets, giving everyone in our area an opportunity to support this worthwhile campaign. If you have an event that you would like to have us attend, please give me a call (386-0684)
The silent auction will be all hand made items. To date, I have received donations of several wall hangings, a vest, pillowcases, large tote, and a baby quilt. I am grateful for the support of my fellow Quilter’s who have generously donated these items.
“As grandmothers from Africa and Canada, we are drawn together by our similarities: our deep love and undying devotion to our children and grandchildren; our concern about the havoc that HIV/AIDS has inflicted on the continent of Africa, and in particular on its women and its children: and our understanding that we have within us everything needed to surmount seemingly insurmountable obstacles. We are strong, we are determined, we are resourceful, we are creative, we are resilient and we have the wisdom that comes with age and experience…May this be the dawn of the grandmothers’ movement.” (Excerpt from the Toronto Statement, August 2006) I know that the Almaguin Highlands is a caring group of people and will support this project with vigor and enthusiasm
Look for us at the Sundridge Sunflower Festival.
