Friday August 12, 2011 Outdoor Movie Come out and kick off the Sunflower Festival by enjoying a free outdoor movie at the Sundridge Community Centre. The family movie “NeverEnding Story” will light up the sky at dusk (9:30 approx). Bring your lawn chair and maybe a blanket so you can curl up with and enjoy the show. Popcorn and refreshments will be available for sale and the Red Brick Cafe will have coffee available on site. In the case of rain, the movie will be held on the ice surface of the SSJ Arena. Saturday August 13, 2011 The busiest day of the Sundridge Sunflower Festival is today. Start the Day off with a Pancake Breakfast hosted by the Sundridge Strong Volunteer Firefighters Association held at the SSJ Arena, breakfast starts at 7:00am and runs until 11:00am. The Opening Ceremonies will take place on the Main Street Stage at 9:45am. Our Sunflower Hostesses dressed in Sunflower Costumes will be greeting our many visitors to the market. South River/Sundridge Airport joins the Sunflower Festival by scheduling COPA for Kids. Free airplane rides for kids 7-17 at the South River, Sundridge District Airport between 9:00am and 12:00pm. Pre-registration is required, registration/waiver forms and details of the event are available at the South River and Sundridge Village offices or contact Gary for more details at 705-386-0547. The Main Street Market has exploded this year with over 70 vendors participating in the event. The Market is open from 10:00am to 4:00pm and takes place on Main Street which is closed to traffic. At the market you will be sure to find something for everyone. Come and take a stroll and enjoy browsing and shopping our market. The seniors group has been busy this year producing various pieces of art, some of which they will have on display and others for sale in the Happy Gang Room in the Community Centre. They will also be hosting a yard sale in-front of the community centre. The Almaguin Judo Club will be doing demonstrations during the day on Main Street be sure to stop and watch these athletes in action. The Sundridge Harmony Guild will be hosting a tea at the Sundridge Community Centre from 11:00-3:00. The cost is for the tea sandwich and a sweet is $5.00. These ladies work diligently for our community so let’s get out and support them. Check out our People page to find out more about the group. In the case of bad weather, the Main Street Market and Main Street Stage events will take place at the SSJ arena. At the Waterfront Swift canoe will have a display of various canoes and kayaks and they will also have some available to test on Lake Bernard. Down at the waterfront from 10:00am-2:00pm get the kids involved in the variety of children’s activities for all ages. Bring down your cardboard and supplies and build your boat to enter the races. Cardboard boat races will start at 11:00am and the Canoe races will begin with the first heats taking place at 12:00 p.m. We thank Swift Canoe for supplying the canoes for this event. The OPP Marine Patrol Boat will be at the waterfront for demonstration. While at the waterfront you can relax and enjoy a burger, hotdog or sausage cooked up by the Sundridge Lions club. Main Street Market Main Street Market starts at 10 a.m. and runs until 4 p.m. on Saturday, August 13th. We will be closing down two blocks of Main Street from Paget to Yonge Street and setting up a vendors market. The market will continue on down the sidewalk along Main Street from Yonge to the Community Centre. Come out and visit the 75 vendors who are filling the Main Street Market this year. Some of the products displayed will be Amish baking and handmade furniture. Many crafts of every description will be on display, including quilted and tie purses, knitting, leaded glass, twig furniture, wooden antique cars, alpaca products, quilts, jewelry, mini barns, wildlife carvings, candles, grape vine products and embossed signs, leather products, O'Brien ski boards, dream catchers, etc. Visit Preston Equipment and see some of their rental equipment and Fern Glen Garden Centre with their display of lilies and other flowers (near the well). Southside Pool & Spas have provided an assortment of hot tubs for your viewing. Look for the judo matches performed by the Algonquin Judo Club. The kids will want to visit the booth with Janet Patterson who does excellent children's face painting. Make sure you visit this display (in front of drug store) early and book an appointment to have your child's face painted as she fills up quickly. There will be lots of homemade food including pies, bread, tarts, candies, pickles, relishes, bean soup mixes, maple syrup, fresh vegetables and so much more. Find out about scrapbooking by visiting Creative Memories, or see a real live goat when you visit Ranshe Farm, in which you can see their wide display of goat lotions. Visit the Strong Township booth and learn about recycling and have the kids try the fish pond. The Sundridge Happy Gang are holding a yard sale at the entrance to the Community Centre. Be sure you pick up a Sunflower T-shirt. Look for the booth on Main Street. Some of our local stores who are not located on Main Street, will also showcase their products giving you a good idea of what our local merchants have to offer. Main Street Stage Back up on Main Street, located in Near North Realty’s Parking lot and the grass of the Rodger’s building will be The Main Street Stage. Entertainment starts at 10:00am. Some of the performers who will be featured on our Main Street Stage will be: Back in Time, Doug and Ada Maeck, Country Strings, Barbwire, One Hung Low, Bridgescene with the Beachcombers performing for the evening street dance. Starting at 5:00pm you can enjoy a light dinner being offered for sale at the Sundridge Legion, or visit one of the many local restaurants who are running Sunflower Festival Specials. At 7:00pm Main Street will once again be shut down to traffic and come alive with music by the Beachcombers for evening Street Dance. Bring your lawn chair and dancing shoes and enjoy the evening as the Beachcombers entertain until 10:00pm. One way through traffic will be detoured from the Yonge Street to Paget Street around, the two downtown blocks. Main Street will be barricaded off for the majority of the day. At the FairgroundsNEW THIS YEAR The Sunflower Festival has expanded further this year to include the Strong Agricultural Fair Grounds. The Agricultural Society has joined us to further expand this great event. The Heritage House will be open for the day. There will be a bake sale to support the Agricultural Society, along with tailgate sales, vendors offering antiques and flea market wares, and equipment dealers. In addition to this helicopter rides will be available on site for a charge. Avoid the parking issues of downtown and park at the fairgrounds where there is lots of parking and to get you back and forth between the Arena and Main Street, you can take a free wagon ride. The Antique Classic Car club may have a display at the fairgrounds, weather permitting. Sunday, August 14, 2011 RBC Sundridge Triathlon will be taking place in the Village of Sundridge and Township of Strong. The first race begins at 8:30 with the sprint triathlon. What an exciting event to participate in or even just to be a spectator.
